Christina Karatzaferi

Exercise Physiology-Myology

Christina Karatzaferi received her BSc in Sports Science from the University of Athens- Greece (1993), her MSc in Sport Science from Loughborough University – UK (1996) and her PhD in Exercise Physiology from Manchester Metropolitan University - UK (2000). Her past positions include: Lecturer at the University of Edinburgh – UK (1999-2001), visiting CVRI Research Fellow at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) (2001-2002), American Heart Association Research Fellow (2002-2004) and later researcher (2004) also at UCSF, Associate Professor in Sport and Health Sciences at Plymouth Marjon University (2016-2019). Christina also leads muscle research at IRETETH-CERTH (previously Institute of Human Performance and Rehabilitation CERETETH) since 2006. Dr Karatzaferi has taught human physiology at the UC Berkeley Extension (2002 and 2003) – USA and maintains various visiting appointments for teaching and research purposes. Dr Karatzaferi first joined the University of Thessaly initially as a research and teaching fellow in 2004 and was later appointed a Lecturer in Exercise Physiology in 2005. At the DPESS Christina teaches undergraduate and post-graduate courses in exercise physiology, environmental physiology and exercise for health and co-leads research and educational activities of the Experimental Physiology and Therapeutic Exercise Laboratory (with co-director Dr G.K. Sakkas). Christina is a member of the European Society for Muscle Research, and the American Physiological Society. She has held prestigious roles (e.g. past President of the Hellenic Society of Biochemistry & Physiology of Exercise; Europe’s representative in the IUPS’ Education Committee for two terms) and currently coordinates a multinational H2020 MSCAS RISE project Muscle Stress Relief, (project 645648).
She referees for scientific journals in health & sport sciences including physiology and biochemistry. She also serves as reviewer for international research funding organizations (e.g. Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft etc) and PhD awarding committees (e.g. McGill University, Canada; University of Oslo, Norway etc). As a main author or co-author, Christina Karatzaferi has published > 60 peer reviewed scientific articles appearing in PubMed. She has written textbooks & book chapters (e.g. in Health Sciences; Hellenic Academic eBooks), as well as has translated books and book chapters rom English to Greek, has co-authored 1 protein structure and has presented > 40 papers in international conferences. Christina Karatzaferi has given >17 invited talks. She has received various awards and has secured competitive national and international funding for both applied and basic science projects. She also participates in science dissemination efforts and in science awareness events (e.g. promoting the inclusion of CPR in the national school curriculum). Christina’s research interests lie at the cross-roads of muscle physiology, exercise physiology, mechanics and metabolism, with an emphasis on musculoskeletal adaptations to exercise, inactivity, chronic disease and oxidative stress. Her research work has been cited > 1989/1123 times with an h index of 27/17 (Google Scholar/Scopus, Oct 2019).
